What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof coffee is a specific type of keto-friendly coffee. In recent years it has become more and more popular. Its popularity has especially flourished among the paleo diet and low-carb diet crowds.

A number of Hollywood celebrities and pro athletes have helped put bulletproof coffee in the spotlight. Because it’s high in calories and high in fat, some people use it as a breakfast replacement.

(I wouldn’t necessarily advise doing that, but it is a thing that some people do—frankly there are a lot of things celebrities and pro athletes do that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend.)

Can I Make It Myself?

Yep, making it is extremely simple. While there are variations on the core recipe, to make what is commonly thought of as bulletproof coffee all you need to do is combine MCT oil and grass-fed butter in a normal cup of coffee. Think of it like a substitute for milk or creamer.

The grass-fed butter and oil used in place of milk makes a supremely creamy cup of coffee—and if you’ve never put something like this in your coffee, trust me when I say it tastes pretty good too.

A high-calorie high-fat cup of coffee in the morning isn’t necessarily for everyone, but when it’s consumed alongside a healthy diet, it’s possible that Bulletproof coffee may have benefits for some people on some low-carb diets (like keto).

Like anything else, if it’s going to work it needs to be used alongside exercise/activity and other healthy habits.

How to Make Bulletproof Coffee

What’s Needed:

  • Blender*
  • Freshly brewed coffee
  • MCT oil
  • Grass-fed butter

    * Technically you can make this by stirring in the butter and MCT oil with a spoon/stirrer by hand, but it takes a long time and worse, has a tendency to spill no matter how gently you approach it. A basic countertop kitchen blender is a much more elegant solution. But, in a pinch…

Directions

  1. Brew some fresh coffee using your normal brewing method.
  2. Mix the coffee, the butter,  and the MCT oil into the blender
  3. Blend the mixture until smooth
  4. Pour it into a mug, serve and enjoy immediately!

Tip: Want to make it more your own? Some people recommend adding a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or other low-carb/no-carb flourishes.
