There are few things in life that are truly universally enjoyed around the globe, and coffee is one of them. No matter where you go in the world (other than maybe Libya) you'll probably find people who love to drink coffee.

It's been beloved for centuries, dating back to the 15th century. It was first introduced to Europe in the 1600s and quickly became a popular drink. Coffeehouses popped up all over the continent, providing a place for people to gather, socialize, and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Which country drinks the most coffee per person?

The answer will probably surprise you.

For us here in the states, it's pretty hard to imagine anyone drinking more coffee than we do—what with our nation ostensibly runnin' on Dunkin (debatable), two Starbucks on every corner, and other hack standup jokes from the 90s.

But it turns out, that's exactly what the people of Finland do.

#1 - Finland

The average Finn drinks about 26.5 pounds of coffee a year. Depending on who you are, that might not sound like that much. But it's well over 2.5 times what us caffeine-addicted jenkit* here in the U.S. drink each year.

(*Jenkit is Finnish for "yankees", as in folks from the United States.)

Now, I never would have guessed Finland would drink the most coffee per person, but what's really surprising are the next two.

Can you guess them? Write your answer down now.

Ready?

#2 - Norway

Another Nordic country. These folks drink almost 22 pounds of coffee per person every year.

By the way, if you're ever in rural Norway—and why wouldn't you be?—make sure you try karsk, a cocktail made with coffee and a whole bunch of moonshine.

But what's really surprising is #3.

#3 - Iceland

Yep, another Nordic country—and a tiny one—drinks the third most country per person. the home of vikings, puffins, glaciers, volcanoes, and every epic movie's filming location for the last ten years. Icelanders drink approximately 19.9 pounds per person per year.

By extrapolating this data, we can surmise that Bjork probably drinks about 20 pounds of coffee per year. Way to go, Bjork!
