It’s not the roast – we haven’t burned our beans or made a really dark coffee. Nor have we made our coffee less soluble. No, how we measure the strength of our coffee is simply by the caffeine content – extremely high levels of caffeine.
At the launch of our brand, founder and Supreme Commander Sean Kristafor, told food24 that we created Black Insomnia to ‘reboot’ the coffee industry. We know Cape Town is the coffee capital of the world, and we felt it was time to offer something a little different – something stronger and darker, with an edge. It was time to create The Strongest Coffee In The World without a burnt and high acidic flavor.
Our coffee is roasted and brewed by Dr G, one of the world’s foremost baristas. He’s the mastermind behind getting your coffee as good as a “hug from your grandma” while still being able to deliver that Chuck Norris roundhouse kick of caffeine goodness. With our first attempt at making the The Strongest Coffee In The World, we completely overshot the mark set by the world’s now-formerly strongest coffee.
Eventually we brought the strength down to a safer level, and settled on 1105 mg per 12 fl oz cup. This way we ensured that we created The Strongest Coffee, while still having a nice walnut—and almost sweet—taste profile.
How do we back up our claim of being The Strongest Coffee In The World? We sent samples of three different coffees to SGS Laboratories—the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification company—headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, to test their caffeine content.
SGS has equipment which uses High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to test samples. The samples are tested versus standard known samples of caffeine. HPLC has the ability to separate, identify, and quantitate the compounds that are present in any sample that can be dissolved in a liquid.
The certified results from the independent, globally-renowned SGS laboratories indicate a clear winner in the title for “The Strongest Coffee In The World.” With 17,524 mg of Caffeine per kg, Black Insomnia Coffee is 27% stronger than Wodfee, with only 13,809mg per kg. And compared to that "strong" company we will leave unamed, who has only 13,179 mg of Caffeine per kg, Black Insomnia is a whopping 33% stronger.

Is Black Insomnia Safe?
So now, you’re probably wondering if our coffee is safe. One 12 fl oz (355ml) cup of our coffee contains nearly double the recommended daily allowance of caffeine.
Here’s the thing: The average, healthy adult can consume way more caffeine per sitting than even the amount that’s in our coffee. In fact, according to Robert Glatter, MD in a USA Today article, it would likely take anywhere from 50-100 cups of [regular] coffee to result in a lethal dose of caffeine. As always, when it comes to any caffeine, those with heart issues should consult their doctor. But unless you’re planning to drink 10 cups of our coffee in one sitting, you don’t really have anything to worry about.
“By no means are these coffees normal or average” says Taylor Martin, in an article he wrote for c|net explaining the differences in caffeine for coffee, cold brew, and espresso. Which, to be blunt, tells you that you should probably not drink OUR Cold Brew if you do not have a high tolerance for caffeine.
Don’t come crying to us if you can’t handle the kick. Our beans may taste great. They may be smooth. They may have “the flavors of nuts and caramel.” But if you can’t handle the kick, our coffee may just not be for you. But, for those who can, we’re happy to be here for you.
